New Energy Versus Old Money

On March 25, 2011, Jim Gordon, a successful entrepreneur  in the New England energy market gave a lively talk at Columbia University about the Cape Wind energy project.  Cape Wind is arguably America’s most controversial renewable energy project.  It was met with vehement not-in-my-backyard (NIMBY) opposition by some of America’s wealthiest and most powerful families.  It took over five years from the initial siting approval in 2005 until all state and local approvals and permits were finally granted.

Jim Gordon is president of the Energy Management Inc., the company developing the Cape Wind project.  During a business trip to New York, Gordon stopped by the Columbia campus and spoke to a room of 100 or so students and professionals about the trials and tribulations he faced in getting this project off the ground.

Gordon gave an overview of the project history and spoke with surprising candor as he shared details of the intense political opposition his company faced.  It’s a heated story and one that reminds us how deep NIMBY issues run.
